dating a former patient

Postby sam_to » Sat Jan 17, 2009 8:08 pm

Hi,

I know it is unacceptable for a physiotherapist to date a current patient but is it ok once the therapy is over?

Thank you for the replies.

I do not think that there is anything in the Statues about problems dating former patients. Some therapists feel that it is wise to allow a few weeks to go by before formally "dating" and how you get their personal contact information is a bit of a question as well. Don't get it from their chart! That is an ethical issue. Law wise, however, no limitations! Hope this helps.

State practice acts will determine this, but generally, there is no reason a patient and PT cannot persue a romantic relationship once the medical relationship has ended. I know in some states, there is a "waiting period"...in new Jersey, it is 3 months.

I dated a patient but it was after 6 months, as we were just friends and we did meet through the consultation. But I do agree you have to be careful where you get the number from, make sure it is outside of work time!
